We're pushing forward to understand the most effective ways to work with creators in order to solve the world’s most pressing problems. Here's some of what we're learning.

the

roadmap

to

change

With all our research: we leverage behavioral science, psychology, and technology to better understand how storytelling makes systems change happen.

We’re forever working to uncover the most effective ways to build bridges between the creative world and the impact community. And to power those partnerships with science-backed storytelling strategies that will lead to long-lasting change on the issues that matter most.

This ever-growing knowledge map is what powers all of our issue-specific work with partners, which in turn makes us even better for next time.

This research is being developed in partnership with:

Phase 1
- HOW TO: ENGAGE DIGITAL CREATORS IN SYSTEMS CHANGE

HOW TO: ENGAGE DIGITAL CREATORS IN SYSTEMS CHANGE

Funded by UN Women

How do you engage creators on issues they’re not already advocating for? We framed this initial research around one of the most difficult issue areas to talk about online: violence against women & girls.

Just some of the highlights of what we’ve learned

  • 1
Let Creators Create: The best entry point into an issue comes from combining the creator’s voice and enthusiasm together with fact-based resources on the issue.
  • 2
Creativity Comes From Feeling Safe: Creators need to feel safe and supported in speaking out, especially in light of cancel culture dynamics.
  • 3
Pay Them: Creators (mostly) won’t just be spontaneously inspired to share publicly about an issue. Since content is their main source of income, they should be paid for their work.
Phase 2
- HOW TO: HELP CREATORS MAKE CONTENT THAT WORKS FOR THEIR AUDIENCE

HOW TO: HELP CREATORS MAKE Issue-based CONTENT THAT WORKS FOR THEIR AUDIENCE

Created and led in partnership with Incite Studios

Once you have creators interested in the work, how do you support them through the process of talking about key issues online? Our fellowship program, called The Better Internet Initiative and run in partnership with Fellow Americans,,funds and works hand-in-hand with content creators across Youtube, Instagram & TIkTok to integrate fact-based policy information directly into their content.

Just some of the highlights of what we’ve learned

  • 1
Consistency Is Key: Monthly education, action, and capacity-building over the course of a year is a simple recipe for creators to learn about systems change.
  • 2
Creators Want to Learn, Then Let Free to Create: The fellows are very open to hearing about impact storytelling best practices, and fusing that knowledge together with their own style, but they don't want to be told how the content should look. You may know the facts, but they know their audiences.
  • 3
Enthusiasm Happens In Community: Creators are hungry to meet each other, whether virtually or in person. That community energy, in turn, further fuels the motivation to keep creating for good.
Phase 3
- HOW TO: EMPOWER IMPACT CAMPAIGNERS TO CREATE PARTNERSHIPS

HOW TO: EMPOWER IMPACT CAMPAIGNERS TO better partner with creatives

Produced in partnership with Ashoka

What do impact campaigners and marketers need to know about creators in order to work together effectively? We led a series of focus groups across the creator, academic, and non-profit/philanthropy worlds to find out. Collaboratively, we created a toolkit of step-by-step practical advice to help impact campaigners bring their first creator campaign to life. But, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Just some of the highlights of what we’ve learned

  • 1
Think Big Picture First: The more a campaigner can articulate upfront about their main campaign goal, the better. Get clarity internally before bringing in outside collaborators.
  • 2
Curate The Right Creators: The most successful campaign might be fronted by a surprising face. Studies show that people like learning alongside others who are learning–meaning that the right creator might not appear as an “activist.”
  • 3
Look At Things From Their Perspective: As with every work situation, it’s easier to work together when you understand someone else’s point of view. The power dynamics with a creator are unique, and it helps to learn a bit about the industry.
Phase 4
- HOW TO: IDENTIFY AND EMPOWER CREATORS AS DE FACTO CITIZEN JOURNALISTS

HOW TO: IDENTIFY AND EMPOWER CREATORS AS DE FACTO CITIZEN JOURNALISTS

In progress now

Content creators are reframing our understanding of citizen journalism. It is imperative that, during this massive media disruption, we answer the following questions to help nurture and safeguard their evolving role in society.…

  • 1
What are these redefined cultural roles that content creators are stepping into/or being forced into–and why is this important to acknowledge?
  • 2
How do we cultivate a healthy ecosystem for the content creation industry so that creators can navigate vested interests, diverse sources, data analysis, communication choices, and the fostering of debate?
  • 3
What are the key storytelling elements that encourage authentic responses (from both creators and their audiences)? Which messages inspire hope about the positive trajectory of systemic change?
  • 4
How do we challenge the negative inevitability that often fosters on social media? How do we replace those narratives with imaginative alternative futures?
  • 5
In what ways can we measure a content creator’s qualitative contribution towards systemic change? How do we translate that into an industry standard practice?
  • 6
How do we nurture environments for content creators that safeguard mental wellbeing and authentic community learning alongside the responsibility of being a trusted resource for data, analysis and critique?

Current Projects

The Better Internet Initiative

Founded in 2020, the Better Internet Initiative is an annual fellowship program created and led in partnership with Fellow Americans. The program is designed to empower and fund influential creators to publish a steady stream of fact-based content on the issues that matter most. With every video created, we discover and track the most effective ways of driving grassroots action around progressive policy.

POWER YOUR FUTURE

In partnership with Grounded.org and The US Department of Energy, the Social Good Club team is building a movement to drive 1 MILLION+ workers into clean energy jobs over the next 5 years. Through creator-led campaigns, we’re creating an army of Americans ready to support our nations’ shift to clean energy.

Recharged Podcast

The Recharged Podcast is a conversational and activity led video podcast which explores the idea of what it means to be an ‘activist’ or ‘change maker’ in the model digital age. Each episode sees Louis Cole, in his electrically converted 1973s VW van, taking his guest to meet, and hopefully be inspired by, a range of local social good heroes, learn about what they do and get hands on with their work. On the drive Louis and his guest will chat to help us understand more about what motivates them and what their own individual take on purpose is.

Beyond Borders

81 DAYS. 22 COUNTRIES. 4-SEATER PLANE. 2 FRIENDS. 1 BIG DREAM. Pilot Juan-Peter Schulze (JP) and travel vlogger Louis Cole set off to circumnavigate the world in a single-engine airplane in a celebration of global diversity. The duo had 81 days to complete their mission of offering a reminder that human connection, shunning preconceptions of different cultures, and respecting history is more important today than ever before.

#DefeatByTweet

With 5 months left before the 2020 Election, we were invited to partner with an amazing group of activists and organizers, led by Xander Schulz, to help launch an online donor campaign that sent a donation to a coalition of black-led community organizing groups in key swing states EVERY TIME TRUMP TWEETED. And now that Trump is out of office, Defeat By Tweet has set their sights on 'The Seditious Six', Reps Jordan, Boebert, and Gaetz, and Senators Kennedy, Cruz, and Hawley, in addition to a wide variety of other issue-specific campaigns.
